Amish Grace: A Review

I have always been fascinated by the Amish. Truly, I am fascinated by anyone who has committed themselves completely to their religion. I am not that way. I have not committed myself to one religion. I am more of an “a la carte” girl, myself. although, as a girl, before deciding I wanted to have a lot of kids, I wanted to be a nun – go figure! There is something very, almost romantic to me about that kind of commitment. But at the same time, there was a time in my life when I tried very hard to be an atheist…and if you had asked me, I would have told you I was.

I never really believed that there wasn’t a God, but I couldn’t justify it – or rationalize it – as being true. For a long time, it seemed impossible to me to believe that there could be a God. For a variety of reasons, that’s changed for me now (and maybe someday I’ll go into them), but for right now, I have to tell you about this book “Amish Grace.”

What an amazing book.

Amish Grace is a story of forgiveness in the face of horrible tragedy. After the shooting in a Nickle Mines one-room Amish school house, where five little girls were executed and five more critically wounded, the Amish – and in particular the Amish families who were affected, forgave the shooter. What’s more, they not only forgave the shooter’s family – he left behind a wife and two children – after the news got out and the Amish were flooded with many letters and money, the Amish community shared the money with them, as they too were now without a provider.

Beyond the shooting, the book looks at forgiveness as being a whole part of being Amish. To be Amish is to forgive. It’s the first thing they do.

The most interesting part of this book is to hear the rare account of how difficult it can be to forgive – but you do it anyway because that’s what God wants from us. “We’re human too,” one Amish man said.

I’ve always idealized the Amish. I read another book about them a while back about a midwife who spent time delivering Amish babies – and they are the most stoic people.

“Amish Grace” though, was a wonderful, heart-wrenching incite into a culture that shies away from the spotlight, doesn’t proselytize their faith (they believe in illustrating their faith through good works rather than “mission” type work), and truly believes in living each day as it is given.

I am humbled by their strength and their resolve. And even if you aren’t humbled by them – this book is an interesting, well-written read and a peek into a culture we rarely see on CNN. Just reading it has helped me on my own journey to seek grace.

A quick apology to all OI readers:

On Saturday, I was out and about and didn’t realize that my new Adsense code was interpreted strangely by Wordpress. We were down most of the day. I’m very sorry that I missed all of you! Wordpress was completely flumoxed by the code and turned it all around totally disabling the site. Fortunately, my uber-geek hubby figured it out and fixed it late last night.

Thanks for your patience!

5 Ways to Green Up Your Sex Life

I realized this morning that I talk a lot about greening up life with baby – but what about before baby arrives? Can sex be GREEN? Without involving lime-flavored Jello? Because that’s just gross…

Here’s what I’ve come up with:

1. Shower together. Save water and your utility bill! But don’t forget to shut the shower off if things get a little too steamy!

2. Candle-light dinners will save your electric bill. And a fire in the fireplace will encourage the use of a renewable heat source (oh yeah, and it’s romantic).

3. Eat fair trade, and very sexy, dark chocolate. Together.

4. Try a natural aphrodesiac – like Horny Goat Weed (yes, it’s real) or Ginseng. For some really slippery fun – eat raw oysters!

5. Be green in bed. Turn down the thermostat and snuggle together on some new bamboo sheets! Bamboo is a wonderfully natural, renewable resource that you can use for anything from floors to sheets to good luck charms!

On February 15, the Toy Industry Association will gather to present their TOTY (Toy Of The Year) Awards.  But first, in honor of the industry that has led the way in commercializing childhood, CCFC will present its inaugural TOADY (Toys Oppressive And Destructive to Young Children) Award for the worst toy of the year.  From thousands of toys that promote violence and/or precocious sexuality to children and push branded entertainment at the expense of children’s play, CCFC has selected five exceptional finalists.  Who will win the dreaded TOADY?  It’s up to you.

Please read the descriptions on the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood website and vote! Voting is open until February 8 and the winner will be announced on February 12, 2009.

All voters who include their email address will be automatically entered into a drawing to win a copy of Consuming Kids:  The Commercialization of Childhood – a brand new film from the Media Education Foundation featuring the CCFC staff and Steering Committee.

OK – Maybe it’s not that I don’t want to write…

I think it’s that I don’t like the idea of only writing. I’m the kind of person who likes to go do stuff and then write about it later. I hate the idea of just sitting at my computer every morning “waiting for inspiration.”

So – there. That’s it in a nutshell. I like to write – I just don’t want to “be a writer.” Is that weird?

When I was a teenager and a young adult, I used to peruse the Sunday want-ads each week, imagining getting different jobs. I thought about applying for all kinds of stuff – as each ad held the promise of a new and different life.

What I really like, is not being just one “thing” – having just one career. Perhaps that’s why I like being a mother so much. Because I get to be a chauffeur, a cook, a nurse, a housecleaner, a tailor, a gardener – you name it.

Maybe I’m just having a mid-life crisis. Maybe I have the winter blahs… Either way, I feel a little out of sorts. :-)

On not wanting to be a writer anymore…

First, a quick apology for the lack of posts. I have been overruled by the most amazing case of writer’s block. That – and I have started to seriously wonder about my future as a blogger and as a writer. To be honest, I often feel that there is so much out there already that there is no way that I could contribute to it further. How is my voice any different? What if it’s not?

Should I really be spending so much time writing about these things when, perhaps, I could be helping the world in some greater – or at least, more specific – fashion?

I also lack the motivation to live a “writer’s” life. I don’t want to talk about writing and publishing anymore. It seems so self-indulgent. I’ve accomplished as much as I could ever want as a writer – except, of course, that elusive “Oprah” bestseller! I must be the only person on the planet who was called three times by Oprah and rejected everytime – talk about the Gods trying to tell you something…

And it’s not that I’m disillusioned with being writer, so much as I just feel like it’s time for me to move on to something else. I spent the last 15+ years of my life working to be a successful (meaning, published) writer. I’ve written 12 books. I’ve been on NPR – three times. I’ve been on TV, had book signings, been on numerous radio shows and even been published in The New York Times.

I’m tired of trying to convince 20 something editors that they should publish my “12 tips for a simpler life” or my “50 ways to get your kids to eat their vegetables.”  I truly just don’t care that much anymore – it all seems so silly and unworthwhile (is that a word?)

Anyway – so aside from the fact that I am due with number seven this summer, I guess I’m looking for a new something to work towards…a new gig, as it were.

Thoughts anyone?

Green in the City?

Anyone can be green when you live on a farm, right? But what about if you move to the city – a city that embraces paper mills, and has coal piles on the banks of the river? Yes indeed! This environmental activist and writer is heading back to the belly of the beast…back to Green Bay, WI!

Green Bay is a wonderful city and one I have often missed living here in Vermont. It’s a truly great place to raise kids, with great schools and opportunities. It does however, need a little push in a more eco-friendly direction!

So – this family of soon to be nine is going to live in the city on a regular city block and see how environmentally conscious we can be! We’re moving after Christmas, so we’ll let you know how it goes! Have tips for being green in the city? Let me know…I can use them.

I just wanted to thank everyone at the VHFA who made me feel so welcome there today! Even though my morning got off to a strange start, I heard that my speech was pretty good – so YAY!

Unfortunately, my pregnant brain and I left my books at my house early this morning, so if you would like a signed copy of Without a Net, or Gandhi Was A Libra, please click here and buy one - all proceeds will go to the Vermont Food Bank.

Lance Mackey on Conan O’Brien

As some of you may know, I am a huge fan of dogsled racing and hope one day to race a team of my own. For now, though, I am happy to follow some of my favorite racers. Here is a great clip of Lance Mackey - who won the Yukon Quest and Iditarod back to back two years in a row. He is also a cancer survivor and just an all around fun to watch guy.

I knew I liked Lance Mackey when I read a news story about him before the 2007 Iditarod. He had just won the Quest for the first time and hadn’t yet received his winnings. His truck broke down on the way to Iditarod (The quest ends in Fairbanks and then the Iditarod starts two-ish weeks later in Anchorage) and he and his dogs had to hitch a ride to Anchorage to start the race. It not only sounded just like something that would happen to me, but as an avid fan, I grew a little weary of seeing “big” name mushers with “big” money always winning. It was nice to just see a guy with a dream (if you don’t mind a little cheese in my post!).

Anyway, here’s Lance on Conan, courtesy of YouTube.com. And for those of you with TV, please check out the show on the Discovery Channel Tuesday night. I’ll be wishing I could see it (I don’t have TV) and will hope they will put it on the Internet soon!
